Lavaman Keauhou features Sunset Fun Run, LavaKid’s Aquathon

Are you a Lavaman?

Find out during a 1.5K swim, a 40K bike and a 10K run during the Lavaman Keauhou race slated for Sunday, Aug. 28. Presented by the Keauhou Resort, the Olympic-distance triathlon is headquartered at the Keauhou Beach Resort and offers three days of activities.

Pre-race day fun includes an inaugural 5K Sunset Fun Run on Friday, Aug. 26 and a Lavaman Expo and a LavaKid’s Clinic & Aquathon on Saturday, Aug. 27.

On Sunday, participants and their fans can attend a post-event awards barbecue with live music. Awards are given to the top three male and female pro/elite competitors and to the top three male and female in each age group plus relay awards in the Male, Female, Mixed, Kupuna & High School divisions.

The race starts 7 a.m. Sunday with a 1.5K swim in the sparkling blue waters of Keauhou Bay. It proceeds 40K along a scenic, single loop bike course up the steep Kamehameha III Road to Kuakini and Queen Kaahumanu Highways, to turn around at the entrance of the Natural Energy Laboratory Hawaii Authority (NELHA), and return along Alii Drive to the Keauhou Beach Resort.

The 10K run traverses through the Keauhou Resort — finishing on the oceanfront lawn of the Keauhou Beach Resort for a beach party.

Last year’s overall winner, Penn Henderson, finished in 2:00.27.

Lavaman Keauhou is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event.

Race packet pickup will be until 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Lavaman Expo is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Keauhou Beach Resort and offers health and fitness products.

Volunteers are needed for course set up and breakdown, registration, body marking, transition area, swim patrol and massage.

The inaugural 5K Sunset Fun Run is set for Aug. 26 is headquartered from Keauhou Shopping Center and followed by live entertainment and dining specials at center restaurants.

Registration is 5 p.m. at the Heritage Courtyard in Phase I with race start at 5:45 p.m. Entry fee is $15 for adults, $5 for keiki 14-and-under, plus a donation for the island’s The Food Basket, Inc.

Fun starts 7:30 a.m. Saturday for the LavaKids Youth Aquathon at Keauhou Bay, presented by the Keauhou Resort.

Kids 7-and-under vie in fun runs while keiki aged 8-14 compete in swim/runs. Also on tap is a motivational sports clinic presented by participating Lavaman triathletes.

Participants get a T-shirt, race medal and lunch. Entry fees are $15 for children age 7 and older and $10 for 7 and under.
