OCEANS ’11 conference set for Hilton (Sept. 19-22)

MEDIA RELEASE

Nearly 500 technology papers have been submitted to OCEANS ’11 MTS/IEEE Kona, a record-breaking number that has conference planners and the local Marine Technology Society Host Committee smiling from ear to ear.

“We are delighted with the high volume of submissions for this year’s ocean science and technology conference being hosted in Kona in September,” says Justin Manley, Technical Programs Chairperson for the conference. “It clearly indicates the accessibility and desirability of Hawaii as a meeting site and destination for a premier international conference.”

OCEANS ’11 MTS/IEEE Kona is sponsored by the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Oceanic Engineering Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE/OES).

The theme for this year’s conference is Oceans of Opportunity: International Cooperation and Partnerships Across the Pacific. The conference will be hosted Sept. 19-22 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

The abstracts and papers already submitted include many from the International Symposium on Underwater Technology conference, which was cancelled due to the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan.

Among the notable speakers will be Dr. Jerry Miller, Assistant Director for Ocean Sciences, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Miller’s presentation will address Ocean Policy. He will also host a town hall session to collect community input from ocean science experts from around the world who will be attending.

Other town hall sessions will address hot topics such as ocean energy and observations systems. The conference expects to attract more than 2,000 scientists, ocean engineers, students, and educators from more than 30 countries.

Plenary keynote speakers include Dr Marcia McNutt, Director, U.S. Geological Survey; Mr. Mike Utsler, Chief Operating Officer, BP Gulf Coast Restoration Organization (GCRO); and Dr. Eddie Bernard, former Director NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.

Additional speakers, Professor Masanao Shinohara of the University of Tokyo and Dr. Yoshiyuki Kaneda of JAMSTEC, will make presentations that were originally scheduled for the International Symposium on Underwater Technology 2011.
