Hawaii’s college-bound public and private school students in the Class of 2011 continue to show progress on the ACT exam.

ACT only reports results for entire states. These results represent all students in Hawaii’s public and private schools who selected to take the test.

Hawaii’s ACT-tested students earned an average composite score of 21.3 out of a possible 36.0, compared to the national average of 21.1.

Hawaii’s subtest average scores were: English, 20.6 (nation 20.6); Math, 21.8 (nation 21.1); Reading, 21.3 (nation 21.3); and Science Reasoning, 21.1 (nation 20.9).

Twenty-five percent of Hawaii’s ACT-tested 2011 high school graduates met or surpassed all four of ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks. This figure is unchanged from the last two years.

The number of Hawaii students who took the ACT increased from 3,054 in 2010 to 3,259 in 2011.

Nationally, 1,623,112 in the Class of 2011 took the ACT, or approximately 49.0% of all graduates.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement test that measures the skills and knowledge taught in high school and deemed essential for college and career readiness.

The ACT exam is administered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
