Hilo, Hawai‘i Island (Aug. 10, 2011) – The Big Island Visitors Bureau added a little more aloha to Hilo last night, and welcomed the Cohen family of Los Angeles, who flew in on the new nonstop flight between Los Angeles and Hilo on United Airlines (operated by Continental Airlines). The Cohens won the vacation getaway at a BIVB consumer blitz in June promoting the new nonstop flight in Los Angeles.

Carrie Cohen was among 474 people who entered a June 18 drawing at The Grove, an upscale, outdoor shopping center in Los Angeles that is the frequent site of Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau and BIVB consumer blitzes to the important Los Angeles market. The prize included roundtrip air for two on UA/CO and three nights at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Carrie and her husband Kamy added three additional nights to their prize, and brought along their 8-year-old son, Alex, and two-year-old daughter, Leila, for a fun family getaway.

“I couldn’t believe I actually won but here we are!” Carrie said after disembarking at Hilo International Airport last night. “I always go to the Hawai‘i events at The Grove because we’re ‘Hawai‘i people’ and I love getting a little taste of aloha whenever I can,” she said.

They plan to get a big taste of aloha this week, with outings planned to family-friendly Hilo’s many attractions, including the Hilo Farmer’s Market, Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo (they were delighted to hear the corpse flower was in bloom), Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut factory, Big Island Candies, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, and of course, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, where they hope to catch a glimpse of glowing lava from the recent activity in Kīlauea’s east rift zone.

The Hawai‘i events at The Grove are extremely popular with Los Angelenos. BIVB’s June event was part of HVCB’s statewide “Perfect Moments in the Hawaiian Islands” Los Angeles blitz, which featured Hawaii-themed events at various locations throughout the Los Angeles area, starting Memorial Day weekend and lasting through June.
