Downed utility pole in Kona and brushfire in Ka‘u cause traffic woes

Police advise motorists to expect traffic delays in Kealakekua due to a downed utility pole near the 112 mile marker of Highway 11 Monday (Aug 8). A crash caused the utility pole to go down near Kee-Kee Street and HELCO crews are on scene making repairs.

The Southbound, makai, lane of the highway is closed at the site as crews make repairs which are estimated to be complete by 1 p.m.

Police reoport the downed utility pole near Konawaena School Road on Highway 11 has been replaced and all traffic lanes open

In the Ka‘u District firefighters are still battling a stubborn brushfire in the Punaluu area near the 55 mile marker. The fire is burning on the mauka side of the highway and has burned 10-15 acres.

Firefighters are using a bulldozer to cut firebreaks to contain the blaze while Chopper One performs water drops and ground personnel extinguish hotspots and flareups.

The highway is open but motorists should use caution due to smoke and firefighting vehicles in the area.
