Woman arrested for attempting to run pickup truck off road and ramming it

MEDIA RELEASE

A Hōnaunau woman was arrested Monday (August 1) after she allegedly tried to run her ex-boyfriend’s pickup truck off the road in Kailua-Kona.

At 6:15 p.m. Monday, police received a report of what was described initially as a road rage incident on Palani Road.

A few minutes later, an Area II vice officer was traveling east up Hinalani Street above the Kaloko industrial area, when he saw vehicles pulling off to the shoulder of the road to make way for two vehicles that were traveling down the road at a high rate of speed. A red Toyota pickup truck was traveling west in the west-bound lane and a blue Ford sedan was traveling west in the east-bound lane. The car nearly collided with the vice officer’s car before it swerved into the west-bound lane.

As the vice officer radioed for backup and turned his car around to pursue the vehicles, he observed both vehicles stopped on the shoulder of the roadway. The woman who had been driving the car got out and ran toward the truck, occupied by a 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man and his 17-year-old female passenger. The vice officer detained the woman, 22-year-old Kahea Reyes of Hōnaunau, until patrol officers arrived to take control of the scene.

Patrol officers determined that Reyes was the ex-girlfriend of the driver of the pickup truck. She reportedly had been following the truck from Palani Road and had attempted to run it off the road three times on Hinalani Street by ramming it in the side and rear.

Reyes was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, criminal property damage, two counts of reckless endangering and two counts of terroristic threatening. She was also arrested and charged with contempt of court for an outstanding bench warrant and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on that charge.

Following her court appearance, she will be held at the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.
