A major year-long, $1.6 million construction project to install two offsite water transmission mains that will connect the new million-gallon reservoir on Kawaihae Road to the planned Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ Lalamilo subdivision will be discussed at the Waimea Community Association Town Meeting at 5:15 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 4, 2011 at Waimea School cafeteria.

Also on the agenda will be a special performance by a troupe of Waimea students who will soon be heading off to college so have agreed to perform together one last time. Fresh from an immensely successful performance of “Sondheim and Friends” at Kahilu Theatre this past weekend, the students – organized by Zen Kuriyama – call themselves the Waimea Teen Theatre Troup. The group includes graduates of Parker School, HPA and Honoka’a High School who have a wealth of experience on stage, having participated in many school and community theatre productions and choral performances.

As always, all community members and friends are welcome at all WCA Town Meetings. There are no membership dues though donations to WCA are welcome to help underwrite expenses for meetings and to sustain WCA’s website (www.WaimeaTown.org) and cover costs for the association’s 51st Annual Waimea Christmas Twilight Parade – set for 5:30 p.m., Sat., Dec. 3, 2011.

Lalamilo offsite water system construction briefing

On hand to brief the community on the Lalamilo Offsite Water System construction project will be Jeffrey Fujimoto, a DHHL project engineer from the Land Development Division.

The project, which received formal notice to proceed in June, will run for about a year. The contractor, CTS Earthmoving, Inc., and Construction Management Consultant SSFM International, Inc., will be installing about 1,100 feet of 16-inch, and 46 feet of 8-inch water lines along Kawaihae Road, and approx. 1,100 feet of 16-inch, 739 feet of 12-inch and 29 feet of 8-inch water lines on the South Kohala Distribution Road (better known as the Kamuela Transfer Station access road). Transmission mains will provide water from the new million-gallon water reservoir that has been under construction by DHHL near the 59 mile marker on Kawaihae Road.

During the project, lanes will be shifted – most likely between Oct. 11 and Dec. 26, 2011. Also, one lane on the South Kohala Distribution Road (transfer station entry drive) will be closed – tentatively between Sept. 21 and Oct. 4, 2011 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Access to the transfer station will be maintained at all times.

Throughout project construction, Scientific Consultant Services, Inc., will provide archaeological monitoring, and the contractor will be working with the Army Corps of Engineers regarding possible unexploded ordnance in the area. Also, a consultation process has been conducted with cultural and lineal descendents of the area.

A fact sheet on the project will be provided including contact information in the event of questions or concerns that arise during the project.

Waimea Food Pantry

As always, all who attend WCA monthly Town Meetings are asked to help support the association’s commitment to support local food pantries by bringing a donation – preferably cash, a check, KTA Sav-A-Tapes and/or Foodland Maka’i My Rewards – or non-perishable food items. Cash or checks are given to Waimea’s Annunciation Catholic Church food pantry to purchase vegetables, fruit and milk as well as other essentials. Checks may be payable directly to a food pantry so the donation is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Also, as always, Starbucks Waimea will provide hot coffee for which the association suggests a small donation be made, again to support local food pantries.
