Greenwell Farms once again captured first place in the Kona Division and second overall at the highly anticipated Hawaii Coffee Association (HCA) Statewide Cupping Competition.

The HCA Statewide Cupping Competition was judged by a panel of coffee experts from across the U.S.A., including Shawn Hamilton of Java City Roasters, Warren Muller of Inter American Coffee, Paul Thornton of Coffee Bean International, Lindsey Bolger of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Jay Isais and Jesse Martinez of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

“The cup quality and diversity has improved every year,” chief judge Hamilton said. “We’re experiencing flavors that would never have been associated with Hawaiian coffee in years past. Everyone is upping their game.”‘

Twenty-seven coffee farms entered the cupping competition in the Kona Division.

Greenwell Farms President Tom Greenwell said, “The competition was very tight between first and second place overall. It came down to just barely a point. Judging palates were truly tested, and it was an exciting event to compete in.”

The legacy of Greenwell Farms began in 1850 when Henry Nicholas Greenwell left England and first set foot on the fertile soil of rural Kona. Henry Greenwell spent the next 40 years farming, ranching and perfecting his Kona coffee, soon exporting it to Europe and the Americas.

In 1873, the President of the Kaiser’s Exposition in Vienna, Austria awarded the Greenwell’s a “Recognition Diploma” for their Kona coffee at the World’s Fair.

Today, Greenwell Farms is situated in the heart of Kona Coffee Country adjacent to the ancestral home of Henry and Elizabeth, which is now occupied by the Kona Historical Society and Museum. The farm is managed by fourth generation Tom Greenwell.

Greenwell Farms grows its own coffee, and operates its processing and visitor attractions on just under 100 acres of the most productive land in the Kona District.

The company also purchases coffee cherry from more than 400 select farmers from the Kona region, shipping worldwide.
