Mauna Lani hosting Chinese media for APEC trip

MEDIA RELEASE

A group of Chinese media from Beijing is visiting the Big Island this week and staying at The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows as part of a press trip organized by the Hawaii Host Committee for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.

The purpose of the trip is to generate interest from Chinese media in Hawaii’s business, energy and science sectors ahead of the APEC Leaders Week meetings in November in Honolulu.

Visiting media represent outlets including China Daily, Economic Observer, People’s Daily, Economic Daily and the Phoenix Information News Channel.

The group will visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center and will make a trip to the summit of Mauna Kea.

Also Friday, following a farm-to-table breakfast prepared by Mauna Lani Bay’s culinary team, they will tour NELHA to learn about its ocean research programs that support sustainable industry development in Hawaii.

Later the media will return to Mauna Lani Bay to learn about the history of the Big Island, and the land that Mauna Lani Bay is located on, called Kalahuipuaa. Mauna Lani Bay’s well-known cultural historian, Danny Akaka, will lead the group on this tour.

The Beijing journalists are the first of what will be several media groups arriving in Hawaii for press trips in the coming months.
