The Breadfruit Festival — Holulu ka Ulu is calling for original recipes that feature breadfruit as the main ingredient.

Celebrity chefs Mark Tsuchiyama of Hualalai Resort, Olelo paa Ogawa of Glow Hawaii and Jacqueline Lau of Roy’s Restaurants, will be joined by food writer and cookbook author Sonia R. Martinez and KITV weekend anchor Pamela Young to judge the Cooking Contest.

The contest is open to all Big Island residents and prizes will be awarded in the categories of Appetizer, Soup/Salad/Side Dish, Main Dish/Entree, Dessert, Best of Show and Healthiest Choice.

The Breadfruit Festival – Holulu ka Ulu is Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Amy B.H Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona,

Contest entrants must submit an entry form with recipe(s) by Sept. 12 to be considered.

Dishes must be dropped off 8-8:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Amy B.H Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden. Contestants are asked to bring dishes two ways – a plated 10” to 12” dish for presentation and judging and a larger platter (approximately 9” x 13”) for public sampling.

The Breadfruit Festival – Hooulu ka Ulu celebrates the rich culture of ulu in Hawaii and the Pacific, raises awareness about the importance of breadfruit for food security and teaches about the many delicious ways to prepare breadfruit.

In addition to the Cooking Contest two guest chefs will be will be demonstrating how to make various delicious breadfruit dishes—Chef Olelo paa Ogawa of Glow Hawaii and Scott Lutey, Executive Chef of the Eddie Aikau Restaurant and Museum.

Chef Betty Saiki and the students from the West Hawaii Culinary Arts School will be preparing breadfruit delicacies and other locally grown food for sale.

Recipes will be made available to the public.
