Strong Persuader, captained by Shane O’Brien, won the Kona Kick Off fishing tournament this weekend, after hauling in a 718-lb. marlin.
Angler Joe Gallegos, fishing aboard the Strong Persuader, was the top point-getter in the first of the 2011 Kona Tournaments, which wrapped up Sunday.
Leilani wins Largest Ono Division with a 34.5-lb ono caught by Lisa Aukai.
Lepika wins Largest Ahi Division with a 129.5-lb ahi caught by Darrell Stokes.
The final points tally put Strong Persuader well ahead (918 points) of Marlin Magic II, Marlin Magic I, Topshape and Kila Kila (all on 400 points).
The Kona Kick Off is the first event in the 25th Annual Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series. A “Four Flags†tournament, the largest marlin earns 40 percent of the base purse, and the largest ahi, ono and mahi each earn 20 percent of the base purse. There are optional daily entries as well.
Next up is the Firecracker Open, which runs July 1-3.
