Flags at half-staff to honor Yamashiro (June 18)

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered all national and Hawaii flags at all State offices and agencies as well as the Hawaii National Guard are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday, June 18, 2011 in memory of former Hawaii County Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro.

Abercrombie called Yamashiro “one of the most influential political leaders and elected officials on the Big Island who played an essential role in transforming the Hawaii County economy from its sole dependency on the sugar industry to other diversified industries such as agriculture, astronomy, and tourism.”

Prior to becoming mayor, Yamashiro served on the Hawaii County Council from 1976 to 1990; he served 11 of those years as the council chairman. He served as mayor from 1992 to 2000. Yamashiro notably left the Mayor’s Office with a budget surplus.

The Governor issued the attached proclamation in honor of Mayor Yamashiro on June 8, 2011.
