Police investigating death of horses with gunshot wounds

Big Island police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two horses in the Hakalau area of East Hawai’i.

The caretaker of a property off Chin Chuck Road across from Veterans Park discovered the decomposing body of a horse entwined in barbed wire with what appeared to be a gunshot wound on June 8. The next day he found a second dead horse on the property with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police ask than anyone with information about any suspicious activities in that area call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
