Police charge Puna man with attempted murder

Big Island police are investigating an incident that left a 65-year-old Hilo man in the hospital with severe head injuries and a 68-year-old Puna man in police custody.

On Monday (June 13) around 10:29 a.m., police received a report of someone yelling for help at an apartment complex in the lower block of Hualālai Street in Hilo. Responding officers discovered the severely injured victim and the alleged suspect still within the victim’s apartment. The victim was treated at the scene and transported by medics to Hilo Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition with a fractured skull and severe lacerations to his head.

Police arrested Robert R. Diego of Hawaiian Paradise Park on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and first degree robbery. He is being held at the police cellblock while detectives from the Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.
