Missing hiker in Volcano area rescued from rainforest

Fire/rescue units responded to a 7:17 p.m. alarm Monday (June 6) for a missing hiker lost in the rainforest in the Volcano area.

A 57 year-old man, a newcomer to Hawaii looking to purchase undeveloped property, hiked alone into a forested 20 acre parcel near the end of North Glenwood Road at 4 p.m. and was unable to find his way back out once darkness fell. The area is reported to be a rainforest dominated by thick Waiwi and Hapuu Ferns.

The man’s family members called 911 and reported the missing hiker. Hawaii County fire department ground crews and Chopper One were dispatched to the scene.

Fire/rescue ground crews searched along a poorly marked trail and shouted out to the hiker which they then located. Rescue crews hand cleared a path in the forest to the missing man, located him and all hiked out without injuries.

The last fire/rescue units were back in quarters at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday (June 7).
