Kona July 4th parade seeking entries

MEDIA RELEASE

The Kailua-Kona Community Parade Association has announced the Grand Marshals for the 16th Annual Kailua-Kona Independence Day Parade will be five members of the county Police and Fire Departments that have served active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

The theme is “Celebrate Freedom.”

The parade is 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 4, starting at the Kona Pool next to Kekuaokalani Gym on Kuakini Highway. It will proceed south on Kuakini Highway, past West Hawaii Today, to Palani Road, to Alii Drive, and then south on Alii Drive to Walua Road just past Coconut Grove Marketplace.

There will be several announcing stations along the parade route from West Hawaii Today to Coconut Grove. Some will feature music or trivia or other diversions before the parade starts.

Applications are available now at www.paradesinkona.com or at the mayor’s office at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Applications are also available by contacting Stone Wolfsong at stoneinkona@gmail.com or 990-4785.

The parade operates with an all-volunteer committee with the support of the Rotary Clubs and Lions Club of Kona.

The parade will be limited to around 60 entrants, with the deadline of June 24 (or sooner if capacity is reached). All are welcome, whether neighborhood and community groups, nonprofit groups or commercial entries. Musical entries and floats of any kind are encouraged.

Volunteers are always needed for marshaling, road and crowd monitoring and assistance, decorating the mahalo float and parade assembly at the Kona Pool parking lot and before the parade starts. Volunteering is a fun way to be involved.

Following the parade, there will be a grand Fireworks Extravaganza over Kailua Bay, provided by Hawaii Pyrotechnics and Explosives, starting around 8:20 p.m.

The fireworks are possible because of the generous support from several local businesses, especially major sponsor, Kona Commons. Hawaii County is providing funds from its fireworks sales fees, and many other generous local businesses and individuals provide funding for both the parade and the fireworks.

Sponsors are needed for both the parade and the fireworks.

Information about sponsoring is online at www.paradesinkona.com, or contact Barbara Kossow at 323-4448.
