NHCH celebrating 15th anniversary (May 28)

North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) marks its 15th year of serving the North Hawaii community Saturday, May 28.

“I’m very honored to be leading North Hawaii Community Hospital as it marks 15 years of serving the residents of North Hawaii. NHCH has an incredibly rich legacy and a deep commitment from the community. We will continue to learn from and be guided by our community as we move forward to improve and grow our services,” said CEO Ken Wood.

In 1996, NHCH opened its doors to bring world-class health care to North Hawaii’s residents. Today, patients consistently rank it among the top hospitals in Hawaii.

NHCH is ranked the No. 1 Small Hospital in HMSA’s 2010 annual state wide quality and service evaluation program; No. 3 Of All Hospitals in the HMSA survey; and No. 1 in Medicare Patient Satisfaction based on the question “Would you recommend NHCH to a friend or family member?”

More than 80 percent of NHCH’s discharged patients respond “yes” – a full 15 points higher than any other hospital in the state of Hawaii.

Currently NHCH is addressing one of the most pressing medical care needs in Hawaii – the physician shortage – through a recruitment program in which the hospital employs physicians to enable them to focus on patient care rather than the business of running a medical practice.

An example is the recruitment of two orthopedic surgeons – Dr. Doug Hiller and Dr. Diane Payne – who are developing a center of excellence in orthopedics. In most cases Hawaii residents will no longer have to go off island for treatment – Dr. Hiller specializes in foot and ankle care, sports medicine and fracture care, while Dr. Diane Payne specializes in hand and microsvascular surgery.

Both physicians provide general orthopedic care. NHCH is also recruiting a family practice physician as well as other specialists, and will soon be taking initial steps in its Emergency Department renovation project.

NHCH’s key services include a state-of-the-art operating room that supports minimally invasive surgical procedures; Imaging Services that work in partnership with Cleveland Clinic Imaging Services and Radiologists; Waimea Women’s Center that provides services for women of all ages (pregnancy services, family birthing unit, annual exams, and menopause management); Kohala Home Health, Rehabilitation Services, and a Sleep Center.

NHCH Background: North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) is a rural 39-bed acute care hospital located in Kamuela, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Non-profit, community owned and locally governed, the hospital opened in May 1996 and cares for Big Island residents and visitors.

NHCH offers an extensive set of hospital services that are centered on patient needs, creating a healing experience for the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
