WHDT to stage spring dance extravaganza (June 4)

West Hawaii Dance Theatre announces its Spring Dance Extravaganza – “The Ballet Doll” with selections from Coppelia.

Coppelia is a charming, funny ballet full of humor and ballet mime The ballet is based upon a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled “Der Sandmann,” which was published in 1815.

The ballet, which premiered in 1870, introduced automatons, dolls and marionettes into ballet. The original choreographer was by Arthur Saint-Leon.

Performed by West Hawaii Dance Academy’s aspiring dance artists, from age 3 through adults, the show is choreography by Midori Satoh and Artistic Director Virginia Holte, and will include live piano accompaniment by Megumi Kopp.

The Second Act of the program features “Cinderella,” a creative pre-ballet by Claire Hollinger and assistant Allison Hollinger, performed by students from WHDT’s Waimea satellite studio.

Other performances include “Born This Way,” a hip hop piece by Lee Vinson, “Give Me One Reason,” a classical jazz piece created by Megan Chapman, “Pep”, a cute 30’s piece by Virginia Holte with music by JellyRoll Morton, and a musical theatre piece from “Hairspray” choreographed by visiting guest instructor Jim Cooney.

Tickets are $12 adults , $6 under age 12 and may be purchased in advance by phone WHDT at (808) 329-8876.
