Rotary Club of Kona Mauka awards $15,500 in Konawaena scholarships

The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka announces it has awarded nine scholarships this year to Konawaena High School students totaling $15,500.

This year’s recipients include:

* Haley Delos Santos – Dr. James Lambeth Vocational Scholarship for $500. Dr. Lambeth received this year’s Vocational Award of Professional Excellence and was given a scholarship in his name. He has been a physician for 50 years and in the military for 40 years. Haley not only aspires to be a Dental Hygienist but she is in the ROTC program. She also received the Hedemann Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Blaine Luiz – Cou Family Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Kyle Sugi – Orelup Family Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Lindsey Byars, Kaysha Llanes-Kelekolio, Taylor Nakamoto – Each student received the Mary Teshima Scholarship of $1,000; a scholarship fund founded in honor and celebration of Mrs. Teshima’s 100th birthday.

* Keisha Harper – Valerie Izuno Scholarship for $1,000; in memory of Mrs. Izuno, who was a Konawaena High School counselor and an integral part of the scholarship process.

* Rachel Miyata (Interact President of Rotary of Kona Mauka’s High School club) – Hawaii Rotary Youth Scholarship of $5,000.

The funding of these scholarships is primarily generated from the club’s annual Valentine Wine Tasting fundraiser, along with the generous support of the Cou, Hedemann, Orelup and Teshima families.
