Rotary Club of Kona Mauka awards $15,500 in Konawaena scholarships

The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka announces it has awarded nine scholarships this year to Konawaena High School students totaling $15,500.

For years, the club has provided the most scholarships to the seniors of Konawaena High School than any other organization or business in the West Hawaii community.

This year’s recipients include:

* Haley Delos Santos – Dr. James Lambeth Vocational Scholarship for $500. Dr. Lambeth received this year’s Vocational Award of Professional Excellence and was given a scholarship in his name. He has been a physician for 50 years and in the military for 40 years. Haley not only aspires to be a Dental Hygienist but she is in the ROTC program. She also received the Hedemann Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Blaine Luiz – Cou Family Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Kyle Sugi – Orelup Family Scholarship of $1,000 per year for two years.

* Lindsey Byars, Kaysha Llanes-Kelekolio, Taylor Nakamoto – Each student received the Mary Teshima Scholarship of $1,000; a scholarship fund founded in honor and celebration of Mrs. Teshima’s 100th birthday.

* Keisha Harper – Valerie Izuno Scholarship for $1,000; in memory of Mrs. Izuno, who was a Konawaena High School counselor and an integral part of the scholarship process.

* Rachel Miyata (Interact President of Rotary of Kona Mauka’s High School club) – Hawaii Rotary Youth Scholarship of $5,000.

The funding of these scholarships is primarily generated from the club’s annual Valentine Wine Tasting fundraiser, along with the generous support of the Cou, Hedemann, Orelup and Teshima families.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.

Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Kona Mauka Rotary Club consists of more than 20 members from the Kona community.

The club meets at noon every Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo.
