Waimea substation problem causes outage

Hawaii Electric Light Company has announced that at 10:46 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 power was interrupted to approximately 2,000 customers in the North Kohala area due to a problem at the Waimea Substation.

Temporary repairs were done and power was restored at 12:35 p.m. HELCO personnel continued to work on the Waimea substation.

At 6:59 p.m., power was interrupted to the North Kohala area to allow HELCO personnel to safely make permanent repairs when another component in the station failed.

Crews isolated the failed equipment, made temporary repairs and power was restored to all customers by 10:29 p.m.

HELCO apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused and sincerely thanks customers for their cooperation and understanding.
