Police charge Waimea man with attempted murder for shooting

Big Island police have charged a Waimea man who was arrested Friday (May 13) for a shooting at a home in Waimea.

At 3:19 a.m. Friday (May 13) South Kohala patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Alaneo Street in Waimea. While en route, officers received additional information that a man was at North Hawai’i Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday (May 14), detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigation Section charged 23-year-old Evan Chong with attempted second-degree murder, first degree assault and first degree reckless endangering. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $57,000 bail.

The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.
