Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7:16 p.m. alarm Monday (May 9) to a structure fire at 15-2677 Opae Street in Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

Arriving fire units found over half of a 800 square-foot home engulfed in flames with some small explosions heard possibly from propane tanks.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 7:45 p.m. and declared it out at 9:45 p.m. Most of the home’s interior was gutted by the fire with the roof still left standing. Fire dispatch reports that the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area but a full investigation by fire inspectors will be conducted Tuesday during daylight hours.

The neighbors reported that the occupants of the home got out before firefighters arrived. There were no injuries reported and two vehicles parked outside were not damaged.

The loss is estimated to be $90,000 with $10,000 of property saved in the blaze.
