National Hospital Week puts spotlight on people (May 8-14)

MEDIA RELEASE

The compassionate side of healthcare is depicted in this year’s National Hospital Week theme, “Champions of Care.” The annual event, scheduled for May 8-14, is designed to unite hospitals and highlight their role in communities nationwide.

“National Hospital Week, first and foremost, is a celebration of people,” said Jay Kreuzer, CEO of Kona Community Hospital. “We are extremely proud of everyone who represents our hospital. This includes employees, medical staff, volunteers, and affiliates. We recognize the important role they play in extending a sense of trust to our patients and our communities.”

National Hospital Week dates back to 1921, when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community-wide celebration would alleviate public fears about the facilities. The idea caught on, and today National Hospital Week is the nation’s largest annual health care event.

A full slate of activities is planned for 2011 at Kona Community Hospital including a first-ever Community Open House 5-7 p.m. May 9 at the hospital to celebrate the healthcare professionals who have dedicated their lives to this challenging but worthwhile industry.

The community is invited to attend this free event which will feature mini hospital tours, complimentary first-come first-serve pupus and refreshments, a special performance by award-winning ukulele player Brittni Paiva, and an opportunity to meet CEO Jay Kreuzer, as well as hospital employees, medical staff and affiliates.

Other events throughout the week include a long-standing tradition of a unit display contest that showcases professional pride. All events are geared toward having fun, exhibiting hospital spirit, and recognizing the hard work that everyone contributes year-round.

National Nurses Week coincides with National Hospital Week and Kona Community Hospital will be honoring their nurses by giving them special pins designed by KCH’s Nursing Administration. Night shift employees of KCH will also be recognized for their dedication and hard work at the hospital.

Founded in 1914, Kona Community Hospital is a 94-bed full-service hospital with 24-hour emergency services that supports the west region of the island of Hawaii. It is a member of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a special agency of the state of Hawaii established in 1996.

It is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Kona Community Hospital is dedicated to providing and enhancing accessible comprehensive healthcare services to the West Hawaii community.
