“When Hula Meets Ballet,” an informal educational cultural exchange, was held at Parker School on the Big Island on Tuesday, April 26. Parker School students Sierra Manker and Marisa Saito demonstrated both traditional and contemporary hula. They were joined by Nora and Carter Child, visitors from the mainland who study at the Washington School of Ballet and perform annually in productions of the Nutcracker at Kennedy Center.

Open to the Parker School community, the program included conversation, warm-ups, and dancing. At the conclusion performers and observers were amazed at the similarities between the genres, particularly the preparation and discipline required for performance.

“When Hula Meets Ballet” was presented by the Orchestra of the Hawaiian Islands, which remains committed to presenting professional orchestral concerts throughout Hawaii and bringing people together through cultural exchange.
