Dr. Sanjay Gupta and his Six Pack of rookie triathletes had a special treat last week, when CNN filmed segments on the Big Island.

Two-time world triathlon champion and member of Team Mauna Lani Tim DeBoom stopped by to give the grow some training pointers and a ton of support.

DeBoom, who competes April 30 in the Wildflower Triathlon in California, said he was glad to help out.

“They are making an effort to change their lives and that’s inspiring to me,” he said. “That’s where I started – coming up through the age groups. It’s very daunting. There is this misconception that triathlon equals Ironman, but really anyone can do it.”

DeBoom said triathlon incorporates three activities most people enjoy as youngsters – swimming, biking and running.

“It really interesting to see how it brings you back to your childhood in such a good way,” he said. “Triathlon for the most part is a pretty selfish sport. Something like this gives you perspective. It’s really re-energized me.”

DeBoom said he had great respect and admiration for the Six Pack, who were selected from about 100 applicants.

“This group is a good representation of middle America,” he said. “They are getting this opportunity, but also there is a lot of pressure on them.”

DeBoom said he made sure all the triathletes have his email address and while he’ll be available to offer his advice and support, he also expects to hear how they fare in the August race.

“I wish them all the best of luck,” he said. “I’m sure they’ll all do great.”

The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows played host for an episode of CNN’s medical affairs program “Sanjay Gupta, MD” and sponsored the mini training camp for the Six Pack, who are joining Gupta in the Fit Nation challenge.

CNN’s Fit Nation aims to show anyone can conquer a triathlon, no matter what their lifestyle or schedule. The show follows the journey of six Americans from all corners of the country, as they transform from novices to triathletes with their ultimate goal competing in the New York City Triathlon in August.

Gupta balances a career as a neurosurgeon, television anchor and an international medical correspondent yet still manages to find time to train and compete in triathlons.
