Books of condolence now are available for signing at the mayor’s offices in Hilo and Kona, allowing Big Island residents to share their messages with the people of Japan.

Art Taniguchi, Bank of Hawaii regional vice president and Honorary Consul General of Japan to Hilo, unveiled the books Thursday and said they give an opportunity for residents to personally send their aloha to Japan following the March 10 earthquake and tsunami.

Taniguchi said additional books are available at the Japanese Consulate on Oahu and at the Japanese Embassy in Washington D. C., which President Barack Obama signed.

While Hawaii residents have been generous in sending their financial support to Japan, Taniguchi said the books let the Japanese people know they are in the thoughts and prayers of the people of Hawaii Island.

Hawaii Island residents and visitors are invited to sign the books, which Taniguchi will deliver to Japan’s officials on Oahu and will be sent to Japan.

To sign the books, visit the mayor’s office:

* In Kona: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. through Thursday, April 14
* In Hilo: 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. through Wednesday, April 13
