HPA Biennial Scholarship Auction (April 9)

MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s 19th Biennial Scholarship Auction is Saturday, April 9 at the Fairmont Orchid in the Mauna Lani Resort.

Tickets are $150 per person and a limited number of table sponsorships still are available. Bank of Hawaii is the event’s lead sponsor.

The biennial fundraiser is the brainchild of the late Anna Perry-Fiske. The last two auctions in 2007 and 2009 raised more than $1 million combined to benefit the school’s financial aid program.

All auction items are owned by the school and 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to HPA students.

Currently, 207 students — 195 of whom are from Hawaii — receive assistance from the program.

“I am very excited to be involved in one of the premier fundraising auctions in our state,” said Keawe Liu, director of the scholarship auction and advancement. “Over the previous three decades, the masterful collaboration of dedicated philanthropists, keen collectors, and exquisite works of art that have been assembled by Bernard Nogues and his committees have become a model for event fundraising. With such proven success, it is humbling to be part of the team that raises such significant funds for students with bounding potential.”

A trademark of the HPA Scholarship Auction is the quality of items presented for sale.

Nogues, director emeritus of the Scholarship Auction and director of the Isaacs Art Center, anticipates much interest in Jules Tavernier’s 1887 oil on canvas, Halemaumau Crater, Kilauea Volcano; D. Howard Hitchcock’s oil on canvas, Honuapo Bay, from Whittington Beach, Ka‘u; Lloyd Sexton’s oil on canvas, Waimanalo from Bellows Beach; Lionel Walden’s oil on canvas, Moonlight Over the Ocean; an original painting by Martha Greenwell, a custom MINI Cooper, and works by the celebrated artists of the last 100 years, including Jean Charlot, Hon-Chew Hee, Huc-Mazelet Luquiens, Horatio Nelson Poole, Shirley Russell, Harry Wishard, and John Young.

Other auction highlights include antique and modern koa furniture and bowls, a custom-built Ka Makani standup paddleboard and paddle with lessons, and extraordinary vacation packages.

“Over the last 35 years, our biennial auctions have consistently set high standards of quality, and I am confident that Keawe will carry on this tradition,” Nogues said. “I am honored to be involved once again in the acquisition and cataloguing of exceptional art pieces and can assure our many and faithful auction friends that some marvelous items will be available for their generous bidding on April 9.”
