April is ‘Tsunami Awareness Month’

MEDIA RELEASE

NOAA’s National Weather Service in Hawaii will conduct the annual Tsunami Awareness Month campaign throughout April to raise public attention to the dangers of tsunamis and to commemorate the 159 lives lost to the April 1, 1946 tsunami – the most destructive in Hawaii’s history.

In support of Tsunami Awareness Month, NOAA is unveiling its new mobile phone web application. This mobile web app is based on the popular Hawaii Tsunami Information Service, an online resource for tsunami information for the State of Hawaii.

The service was used by more than 110,000 people during the recent tsunami warning March 11, 2011. This resource contains an interactive tsunami evacuation zone map that is searchable by address and includes additional tsunami preparedness and evacuation information.

The service is applicable statewide, and was recently updated with the latest tsunami evacuation zones for the island of Oahu. The service can be accessed on a computer or by mobile phone by visiting http://tsunami.csc.noaa.gov

In a partnership between NOAA, the State of Hawaii and other local officials a Tsunami Safety Booklet was developed to promote tsunami awareness.

This booklet, modeled after the Fire Safety Booklet used for years in the classroom, was designed to educate school-aged children in the state of Hawaii about the dangers of tsunamis. The Tsunami Safety Booklet will be distributed at public and private schools throughout the state during Tsunami Safety Month

NOAA’s National Weather Service is the primary source of weather data, forecasts and warnings for the United States and its territories.
