The Napau Fire site has received significant rainfall over the last few days keeping the fire at bay but making the lava fields very slippery and unsafe for firefighters to walk on. Fire crews have hiked out of the area. Helicopter and ground crews will observe the burn area for any smoke over the next few days. Night flights using infrared mapping devices will search for any hotspots in the burn area.

Helco crews are installing two utility poles along the southbound lane of Palani Rd above Henry Street on March 29 & 30. Please drive cautiously between the hours of 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.  This work is in preparation to widen Palani Rd and is part of the offsite improvements for Ane Keohokalole Highway.

Big Island police are looking for a 50-year-old Mountain View man wanted for allegedly stabbing a 46-year-old Volcano man in Kurtistown on March 25, 2011.

On March 25, 2011 at about 1:20 pm, Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an assault victim at the Kurtistown Park off of Route 11. Police and Fire Department Rescue personnel discovered that the 46-year-old victim sustained a stab wound to his chest.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section have taken into custody a 19-year-old man in connection with an assault with a sledge hammer that occurred at a residence in Panaewa on March 25, 2011.

On Friday at about 4:00 pm, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious male at a residence on Auwae Road in Hilo. Responding officers and Fire Department personnel discovered a 55-year-old man with a severe head injury.
