On Tuesday (March 29) at noon, Kona patrol officers responded to Kona Community Hospital, where emergency room staff reported that a patient had stolen medications from a “crash cart” and then driven away from the hospital.

Police investigation led to the arrest of 26-year old Patrick J. Malloy at his Kailua-Kona home on suspicion of theft.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section, who took over the investigation, executed a search warrant on the car Malloy had been driving and recovered medications belonging to the hospital. The drugs were for patients suffering from heart conditions and not controlled substances, which are kept locked away.

At 5:50 p.m. Wednesday (March 30), they charged Malloy with second-degree theft. His bail was set at $5,000.

Malloy was held at the Kona police cellblock pending his initial court appearance on Thursday (March 31).
