Kaiser helps the hungry with rainbow of color

MEDIA RELEASE

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is helping feed the state’s hungry in a very colorful way. In addition to showing some green and donating $2,500 to the Hawaii Foodbank, the health care organization is also promoting “Eat Right with Color” as the theme of its fifth annual Nutrition Month Food Drive.

“Eating a variety of colorful foods provides nutrients that are important for good health,” said Leticia Nagata, Kaiser Permanente registered dietitian. “We’re asking for donations of kalakoa kaukau, colorful foods, to help feed Hawaii’s hungry with nutritionally balanced meals.”

The public can get involved by dropping off nonperishable goods or a monetary donation through the end of the month at Moanalua Medical Center and any of Kaiser Permanente’s 18 clinics on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. The drive is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente’s Nutrition Services Department and the American Dietetic Association.

According to the Hawaii Foodbank the five items most needed are canned foods such as meats and tuna, soups, vegetables, fruits and canned meals. Consider donating these colorful foods:

* Red: canned salmon, canned tomatoes, beets, salsa, and spaghetti sauce
* Yellow/orange: corn, yams, peaches, pineapple, dried mango, and other fruits
* Green: lentils, split peas, canned peas, green beans, and spinach
* Purple/blue: black beans, raisins, prunes, and dried blueberries
* Brown: tuna, canned chicken, beans, chili, nuts, peanut butter, and whole grains
