Kona Borders set to close

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Editor

Borders has filed for reorganization relief under Chapter 11 and the Kona store is a casualty.

As part of the reorganization, Borders announced it is implementing a strategic store closure program in which it will close approximately 200 Borders superstores nationwide in the next few weeks.

Two Hawaii stores will close, according to a list released by the company:

  • Kailua-Kona: Crossroads Center, 75-1000 Henry St.
  • Lihue: K-mart Kukui Center, 4303 Nawiliwili Rd.

In response to the Borders announcement, Kona Stories Book Store owners Brenda Eng and Joy Vogelgesang issued the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

“We believe that brick and mortar bookstores are a good thing and add heart and value to a community. We all lose something when a bookstore closes. It is now important to turn our attention to keeping our locally owned bookstores open.

“By shopping at a local independent business you keep our Kona community thriving. Spend $100 at a local business and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.

“Kona Stories independent book shop is located in Keauhou Shopping Center and offers new and used books of all genres and will remain open seven days a week.”
