Police urging extra caution around pedestrians

MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police encourage motorists to use extra caution around pedestrians crossing at the intersection of Waianuenue Avenue and Kamehameha Avenue in downtown Hilo.

Police have received complaints from business and community members saying drivers are not yielding the right of way to pedestrians and — in many cases — not coming to a complete stop at a red traffic light before making a right-hand turn.

Police will increase enforcement efforts in the area and are working closely with the Department of Public Works to mitigate the problem.
