Kona advocate writes about Post Polio Syndrome

Jean Hartley

MEDIA RELEASE

Local advocate and polio survivor Jean Hartley has an article set to appear in the February/March issue of PN Magazine.

“Post Polio Syndrome: the Second Time Around” combines research with Hartley’s personal story and those of 10 others who are now encountering the debilitating effects of childhood “infantile paralysis” in their mature years.

The PN article is written from the perspective of those who endured multiple surgeries, lengthy hospitalizations and family separations in their early years.

Now adults, 30 percent of these survivors struggle with Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) symptoms of extreme fatigue, joint pain, and frightening energy loss. Vaccines controlled the spread of polio, but there is no cure for the scourge that returns for a second visit.

Hartley is the Director of Disabled Adventures Hawaii, an on-line service to physically disabled persons with mobility issues. The website offers accessible sports opportunities and specialized services on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

PN is a monthly magazine published by Paralyzed Veterans of America with a distribution of 40,000 internationally.
