High surf advisory in effect until Sunday (Jan 23), some beaches closed

Hawaii County Civil Defense message:

A High Surf Advisory is in effect for west facing shores of the Big Island until 6 AM Sunday.

The following beaches are closed today due to high surf:

  • Mauna Kea (Kaunaoa, Maumae)
  • Puu Honua o Honaunau
  • Kaloko Fish Pond
  • Hapuna, La‘aloa
  • Kahalu‘u

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HONOLULU HAS ISSUED A HIGH SURF ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM HST SUNDAY. THE HIGH SURF WARNING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

* SURF…PEAK HEIGHTS 6 TO 10 FEET TODAY LOWERING TO 4 TO 8 FEET TONIGHT.

* TIMING…SURF WILL CONTINUE TO SLOWLY LOWER…BUT WILL REMAIN LARGE THROUGH TONIGHT.

* IMPACTS…STRONG CURRENTS AND LOCALIZED BEACH EROSION ALONG EXPOSED COASTLINES.

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY MEANS THAT HIGH SURF WILL AFFECT BEACHES IN THE ADVISORY AREA…PRODUCING RIP CURRENTS AND LOCALIZED BEACH EROSION.
