Mountain View man sentenced to 10 years in prison for meth trafficking and burglary

Prosecuting Attorney Jay T Kimura has announced Joshua Shane Soares, a 22-year-old resident of Mountain View, was sentenced Jan. 18 to 10 years in prison for the offenses of Methamphetamine Trafficking in the Second Degree and Burglary in the First Degree.

On April 5, 2010, Soares was stopped by police for driving with his 1-year-old son not properly restrained within his vehicle. Soares was also found to be driving without a driver’s license or insurance.

During the traffic investigation, a narcotic detection canine alerted to the presence of contraband within the vehicle. Police subsequently found 1.08 grams of methamphetamine, numerous empty packets and a digital scale within the vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that Soares was on felony probation for Burglary in the First Degree at the time he committed this new offense.

Soares was charged via Indictment with Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree, Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia, Driving Without a License, Driving Without Insurance, Fraudulent Safety Check, and Attempted Methamphetamine Trafficking in the Second Degree.

On Oct. 26, 2010, Soares entered a plea of “Guilty” to Attempted Methamphetamine Trafficking in the Second Degree.

On Jan. 18, Soares was sentenced by Judge Glenn S. Hara to concurrent 10-year terms of imprisonment for Attempted Methamphetamine Trafficking in the Second Degree and Burglary in the First Degree. Based upon his criminal history, Soares must serve three years, four months of this sentence before being eligible for parole.
