Fatal pickup truck crash in Waikoloa Village Wednesday night (Jan 12)

POLICE MEDIA RELEASE

An unidentified man was killed Wednesday (January 12) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Lua Kula Street in Waikoloa Village in the South Kohala District.

Responding to an 11:34 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2006 Toyota pickup truck and traveling north on Lua Kula Street when he ran off the right side of the road, struck a light post and struck a tree.

The victim was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Fire Department personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.

This is the third traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with three at this time last year.

A man killed in a one-vehicle crash on Lua Kula Street in Waikoloa Village in the South Kohala District has been identified as 26-year-old Jonathan E.H. Chambers of Waikoloa.

FIRE DEPT MEDIA RELEASE

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 11:33 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Jan 12) for a fatal pickup truck crash fronting 68-3831 Lua Kula Street in Waikoloa Village.

Upon arrival crews found a 26 year-old man’s body trapped in the driver’s side of the cab of a Toyota pickup. The pickup had major damage to the left side of the vehicle from the front bumper to the back of the cab.

The roadway was closed with traffic being detoured to Paniolo Avenue as police investigated the crash. Firefighters had a difficult time recovering the body due to the pickup’s position with a tree and steep embankment.
