Oahu man charged with attempted murder in Puna stabbing

Big Island police charged a 40-year-old Waipahu man Tuesday (January 4) with second-degree attempted murder along with other charges stemming from an incident in Puna on Sunday (January 2).

Responding to a 7:39 p.m. call Sunday, Puna patrol officers discovered a 19-year-old man with stab wounds to his arm and abdomen at a Plumeria Street address in Mountain View.

The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Anthony Kali of Waipahu. Patrol officers arrested him a short time later.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continued the investigation. Investigation revealed that the suspect and the victim had been in an altercation that escalated and became violent while inside the Plumeria Street house.

Kali was charged with second-degree attempted murder, abuse of a family or household member and first-degree assault. His bail was set at $56,000 and he was held overnight at the Hilo police cellblock until his initial court appearance Wednesday (January 5) in South Hilo District Court.
