MEDIA RELEASE
Hawaii Tobacco Quitline is reminding smokers the new year is a good time to quit.
Here’s five ‘Quit Tips’:
* Pick a quit date and stick to it. Your quit date is the day you will stop smoking. Make it a day that you think won’t be too stressful and may be something that has some significant meaning to you, like your loved one’s birthday or New Year’s Day.
* Prepare for your quit date by throwing out your cigarettes – having them around is a temptation you don’t need. Get rid of ashtrays, lighters, or anything else that makes you think of smoking.
* Know your smoking triggers. Your mind is conditioned to want a cigarette in certain places, at specific events, when you’re with particular people, or when you’re feeling a certain emotion. As you’re in the process of quitting, take the time to figure out how you will deal with these people, places and things without taking a puff.
* Drink lots of water. Cigarettes contain thousands of toxins. While you’re quitting, take the opportunity to flush some of the poisons out of your body.
* Celebrate your victories. Instead of beating yourself up for slipping, applaud yourself for your small victories. Say, “I’ve made it through half a day without smoking. I’ve made it through three days.†If you take a puff, it’s okay, tell yourself it’s just a slip, but that you’re still going to quit.
Hawaii Tobacco Quitline offers free information and support to smokers who want to quit.
