Reporting by Margaret Masunaga
Regular Hawaii 24/7 contributor Margaret Masunaga and her family joined other passengers on the Sunset Sail dinner cruise on the Alala catamaran sailboat got a special gift from a school of whales Dec. 25.
The passengers also included a couple renewing their marriage vows after 18 years of marriage, and a couple visiting from Ireland.
“Ocean Sports champagne sunset sail with dinner as well as mai tais was not the highlight of the cruise… it was the show put on by the whales,” Masunaga said. “The last time I went whale watching was with my girlfriends on Maui in 1994. We only saw a glimpse of a whale from far away. Today, we saw a whole group of whales. They seemed to know it was Christmas Day, and they treated us to a very special gift of their presence in the water off the Kohala Coast from Kawaihae to Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The evening ended with a beautiful Kona sunset. All I can say is, “Lucky we live in West Hawaii!!”
Masunaga’s daughter Jana Masunaga also had a chance to test her Christmas present – a new Canon camera.
