Highway 190, Saddle Road and Puako Beach Drive open to traffic

MEDIA RELEASE (12/22/10 4:50 p.m.)

Hawaii County Police advises motorists to avoid Highway 190 (Mamalahoa Highway) and Saddle Road due to heavy rain, debris and flooding. Currently Highway 190 from the Waikoloa Junction to the Lalamilo Road intersection is closed to traffic. Saddle Road is closed in both directions due to debris and flooding.

Highway 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Highway) and Kawaihae Road are open to traffic.

Police forecast the the roads will be closed until about 10 p.m.

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (12/22/10 5:39 p.m.)

Hawaii Police Department advises you to AVOID Puako Beach Drive due to flooding and debris. Puako Beach Drive is currently closed at the Puako Boat Ramp. The Puako Association has opened the Access Road to Mauna Lani for residents that need to exit the subdivision.

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (12/22/10 8:21 p.m.)

Saddle Road is now open to traffic. Highway 190 is now open up to the Saddle Road junction. The section of Highway 190 between Saddle Road and Waimea remains closed due to flooding and debris on the road. State highways crews hope to open the road by 11:30 p.m.

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (12/22/10 10:18 p.m.)

Hawaii Police Department reports that Rte. 190 from the Saddle Rd. junction towards Waimea is now open to traffic. Barricades have been posted in designated area along the highway warning the public of water ponding in certain areas along the highway. The police asks that drivers use caution when driving through this portion of the highway.

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (12/22/10 10:53 p.m.)

Hawaii Police Department reports that Puako Beach Dr. is open to traffic however barricades have been posted near the area where water is currently crossing. The public is asked to use caution when approaching the barricaded area as only one lane will be opened to traffic. This one lane closure will remain until tomorrow morning when Public Works conducts a check of the area.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HONOLULU HAS ISSUED A

* FLOOD ADVISORY FOR THE ISLAND OF HAWAII IN HAWAII COUNTY

* UNTIL 930 PM HST

* AT 618 PM HST…SPOTTERS REPORTED HEAVY RAIN…ALONG WITH THUNDER AND LIGHTNING AROUND THE PUNA DISTRICT SOUTH OF HILO. RADAR IS ALSO TRACKING SEVERAL SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM CELLS ACROSS THE ISLAND.

* THIS FLOOD ADVISORY COVERS THE ENTIRE BIG ISLAND

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

STAY AWAY FROM STREAMS…DRAINAGE DITCHES AND LOW LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING.

RAINFALL AND RUNOFF WILL ALSO CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO PONDING…REDUCED VISIBILITY AND POOR BRAKING ACTION.

DO NOT CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON FOOT. TURN AROUND…DON/T DROWN.

THIS FLOOD ADVISORY REPLACES THE PREVIOUS FLOOD ADVISORY WHICH COVERED PORTIONS OF THE BIG ISLAND.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS ALSO IN EFFECT FOR ALL HAWAIIAN ISLANDS EXCEPT KAUAI COUNTY.

THIS ADVISORY MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED BEYOND 930 PM HST IF HEAVY RAIN PERSISTS.
