One person was killed and two injured Sunday evening in a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Nani Kailua Drive.
Fire crews were called to the scene just after 7 p.m. and found a Volkswagen sedan and a Ford full-size truck with a trailer carrying five horses had collided from opposite directions.
The driver of the Volkswagen was extricated from the car, but died.
Two people escaped the Ford truck and were transported to Kona Community Hospital.
At least one horse appeared to have been injured.
Queen Kaahumanu Highway was closed to traffic and rerouted through Hualalai Road.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
