Kealakehe High School locked-down after man brandishes knife on campus

Big Island police arrested a 21-year-old man Tuesday (December 14) during a lockdown at Kealakehe High School.

Kona patrol officers responded to a 9:16 report of a trespasser on campus. Upon arrival, police learned that the intruder had displayed a knife when contacted by a school security guard for being on campus without permission. The school security guard restrained the suspect until police arrived.

Police arrested Justin Matias of Ho’okena on suspicion of trespassing, terroristic threatening, promoting a detrimental drug, promoting a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.

During the incident, the school was on lockdown as a precaution for the safety of the students.

Matias was taken to Kona Community after complaining of pain to his back and a minor laceration to his ear from the struggle with the security guard.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation.
