No injuries or damage was reported after a gasoline spill Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Costco in Kona.
Fire crews and a HazMat team responded to a 12:02 p.m. call of gas coming from underneath a pickup truck.
So much gas was spilled that crews evacuated a portion of the parking lot and Costco supplied materials to help contain the fuel.
Crews dismantled the bed of the pickup but were unable to stop the leak by plugging the vehicle’s ruptured fuel tank.
Fuel was siphoned directly from the tank and lowered the level of the fuel far below the rupture.
The truck was towed away and the parking lot was reopened before 3 p.m.
