Kamehameha-Hawaii champs over Lahainaluna in Cardinal-Warrior Classic

The final day of competition in the 5th Annual Cardinal-Warrior Classic saw the Red and Blue brackets go head to head, to see which team would be crowned king of the court. The early session action saw the visiting St. Frances win over Kohala 57-52, Pahoa squeak past Keaau 33-32, Honokaa slip past Kona 39-38, and Hilo defeat HPA 51-43. In the evening session, Kalani took 7th place over Kealakehe 69-59 and Kaiser secured 5th place with a 69-59 win over Kalaheo.

The third place game was very exciting, with the two host teams battling it out. Neither team wanted to yield ground, but the Cardinal were eventually able to hold off the Warriors for the win, 56-52. The high scorers for the Cardinals were Thomas Fairman with 25 points and Sebi Ohara-Saft with 21 points. The Warrior high scorers were Isaak Janado with 19 points and Cameron Ita with 17 points.

In the championship game, the Kamehameha Warriors took on the Lunas of Lahainaluna, Maui. The first half was extremely competitive, as both teams kept the game close. However, the Warriors were able to pull out to a strong lead in the second half and took the game and the overall trophy, 68-38. The high scorers for the Warriors were Shaun Kagawa with 15 points, Lanaki Apele with 12, Colby Cabatu with 11, and Kaeo Alapai with 10 points. The Luna high scorers were Luke Williams and Leroy Rickard with 11 points and TJ Rickard with 9 points.

The three-point champion was Isaak Janado of Waiakea with 15 three point baskets in one minute. Jayce Carvalho of Kamehameha took second place with 13 baskets.

Eight of the Big Island teams (Kona, Kau, Waiakea, Keaau, Kealakehe, Kamehameha, SJS, Hilo) will meet next week in the Hilo High Holiday Prep Classic Dec 9-11. Waiakea, Laupahoehoe, SJS, Kona, Honokaa, and Pahoa will meet Dec 20-22 in the Honokaa Tournament. The regular girls’ basketball season starts Tuesday, Dec 7th.
