Keaau man arrested, released after assault

Big Island police released a 27-year-old Keaau man Saturday (Nov. 27) who was arrested earlier for assault.

After conferring with prosecutors, detectives released Herbert Anakalea pending further investigation.

Around 8 p.m. Friday (Nov. 26), Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a person trespassing at a home in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Officers discovered a semi-conscious 38-year-old man, who has no permanent address, in the carport of the home.

Fire Department personnel took the victim to Hilo Medical Center. He was later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police arrested Herbert Anakalea on suspicion of assault.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident call Detective Reed Mahuna at 961-2384 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 or 329-8181 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe.
