Landfills, transfer stations closed on Thanksgiving

MEDIA RELEASE

The county transfer stations and landfills across the Big Island will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25.

The county transfer stations equipped with gates will be locked, and the Department of Environmental Management reminds transfer users it is illegal to dump rubbish or litter in front of the gates or around the closed facilities.

The following facilities will reopen the day after the holiday: both landfills (Hilo and Puunahulu); six of the smaller transfer stations at Puako, Laupahoehoe, Papaikou, Glenwood, Pahala and Keei; and at transfer stations that are normally open daily at Hawi, Waimea, Honokaa, Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa, Waiohinu, Kealakehe and Keauhou.

The remaining facilities (Paauilo, Honomū, Kalapana, Volcano, Waiea) will resume normal operating hours.

See your local Solid Waste facility attendant for an updated card containing the schedule effective Aug. 1, 2010.

Solid Waste Division employees appreciate the opportunity to spend the holiday with their families and thank everyone in our community for their kind cooperation.
