Zach Wilde scored a career-high 26 points and pulled in nine rebounds as the University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Western New Mexico University 75-67 in the UHH gym.
The Mustangs (0-3) hit three consecutive 3-pointers to get off to a fast start but when they missed the mark, the Vulcans (2-1) began to turn the rebounds into quick baskets.
“It got our offense going,†said Wilde. “We’re a much better up-tempo team. When we’re walking the ball up it just slows everything down. Once we get the ball going, everybody starts moving.â€
Wilde was 10 of 13 from the field with five baskets coming from over the top passes from Andrew Gipson. Wilde was also 6 of 9 from the free throw line.
Gipson and Justin Smith added 14 points each.
As a squad, the Vulcans were 25 of 56 from the field, 2 of 9 from 3-point range and 23 of 39 from the free throw line. They also had 10 assists with 14 turnovers.
“There were a lot of little things we didn’t do that well,†said UHH Head Coach Jeff Law. “With a lot of returners, I’m not very comfortable with what I saw.
“We’re still trying to find our identity and hopefully it won’t take too long. We won’t be able to rely on six guys like we did last year. We’re going to need more help. Sooner or later we’re going to find where that help is going to come from.â€
