Mauna Lani hosts Kona Surf Film Festival (Dec. 3-4)

MEDIA RELEASE

Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows is proud to be the new home of the Kona Surf Film Festival, an inspiring showcase of new release surf flicks from around the globe that capture the art of surfing.

The 2010 Kona Surf Film Festival is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4.

Films will be shown under the stars at Mauna Lani’s outdoor cinema. BYO beach chair and enjoy ice cold beer and fish tacos as Mauna Lani’s chefs fire up the BBQ.

Highlight films include the locally filmed and produced Destination 3° (degrees). Kona’s very own Jenny Kalmback and Honolulu’s Morgan Hoesterey, who are two of the world’s elite female standup paddleboarders, conquered the nine legendary and infamous open ocean channels that link the Hawaiian Islands together. The title draws from the three degrees of latitude that separate each island.

This story is more than a standup paddleboard adventure, it’s a platform to raise awareness of the impact that plastic contamination has on our oceans.

Another highlight is Stoked and Broke, a staycation “Surfari” on zero dollars that follows surfers Ryan Burch and Cyrus Sutton as they set off on a 30 mile, eight day walk through San Diego. The film is a blend of humor, adventure, creativity, honesty and epic surfing.

Expect to see a few famous faces of the surfing world and meet some of the filmmakers at this year’s festival.

The event will benefit the Surfrider Foundation Big Island Hawaii Chapter – Kona Kai Ea.

Founded in 2003 by Chad Campbell, the Kona Surf Film Festival celebrates the art of surfing. Chad, a surfer, filmer and editor himself, has always held a passion for film-making and the surfing lifestyle. He wanted to use that passion to bring the community together to participate in the long-held tradition of surfers watching surf films, on the big screen. Often showcasing unknown films and filmmakers who have a love for all things surf, the Kona Surf Film Fest gives people an opportunity to share in the stoke, outside of the water.
