Halloween weekend events and activities

* HUMANE SOCIETY PET WALK, HILO. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Liliuokalani Park. Walks start at 9 a.m., followed by contests and family fun until noon.

* KOHALA MOUNTAIN FARM PUMPKIN PATCH is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Select from one and a half acres of pumpkins. Prices vary. It’s 75 cents per pound. Location: Highway 250/Kohala Mountain Road between Kahua Ranch and Paniolo Adventures, halfway between Waimea and Hawi. Call 345-6323.

* HALLOWEEN HOUNDS COSTUME PARADE, 10 a.m., Waimea Town Market at Parker School. Prize ribbons will be awarded in five categories including funniest, cutest, scariest, most original and judges’ choice. All canine participants, who should register for the free event around 9:15 a.m., receive dog treats. The event also features face painting for keiki and a market.

* HOWL-O-WEEN PET COSTUME CONTEST, Noon-1 p.m. at Petco. Dress up your pet and enter to win a prize. Get in the spirit with your pet or just watch the fun. Registration begins 15 minutes before the contest starts.

* DI DE LOS MUERTOS, or the Day of the Dead, at 2 p.m. at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Llimited-space (25 participant) workshop to learn the art of ‘Papel Picado,’ paper cutting for the traditional decorations that adorn the Dia De Los Muerto (Day of the Dead) Festivities in Mexico. * RETURN OF THRILLER is 2-9 p.m. at Keauhou Shopping Center. Community celebration will feature three entertainment stages and costumes contests for both children and adults, with more than $1,000 in cash and prizes. “Thriller” will offer a keiki corner, as well as dozens of local vendors, food booths and center merchants. * PRINCE KUHIO PLAZA Halloween Program sponsored in partnership with the Prince Kuhio Plaza, P&R Recreation Division, Hilo High & Waiakea High School Key Clubs, Hilo Intermediate & Waiakea Intermediate School Builders Club. Runs 3:30-7:30 p.m. Includes costume contest, crafts, games, picture taking and more.

* KONA PACIFIC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL 10th annual Magical Journey, 5 p.m. on campus in Kealakekua. Experience a fairy-tale inspired journey through a pumpkin-lit wooded trail. Children and parents can also participate in games and face painting and decorate their own trick-or-treat bag to take on the journey. Cost $5. – SOLID ROCK MINISTRIES “Candy Land 2010,” 5-8 p.m. at the Old Kona Airport Park. The free candy-filled maze. Participants are asked to donate a nonperishable food item. For more information, call 327-6543.

* HAAS Theater Arts Program’s 3rd Annual Spooktacular “House of Horrors” is open 6-9:30 p.m. for a $6 donation. Help support the Hawaii Food Bank and bring a canned food item for a $1 discount. No one under the age of 9 is permitted in the “House of Horror’s” and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

* FRIGHT SHOP AT EARL’S GARAGE is 6:30-9 p.m. at Earl’s Garage, Tutu’s House in Waimea. It’s open to the public and $2 donation.

* 6th ANNUAL OKAKE STORY TELLING 7 p.m. at Hotel Honokaa. Tickets $8 general, $5 for those under 12.

* FRANKENSTEIN FOLLIES A HALLOWEEN SPOOF, 7:30 p.m. at the LEAD Center in Kona. The 90-minute Halloween-themed comedy/musical Frankenstein Follies is a story about the search for love. Along a twisted road, they will encounter vampires, ghouls, witches, skeletons and a teenage werewolf. In the end, a good time will be had by all… at the “Monster Mash.” Tickets are $8 and support the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity’s Youth and Education program.

Sunday, Oct. 31

* PARKER RANCH CENTER hosts a trick-or-treat 1-4 p.m. Keiki explore the shopping center and receive treats from various stores. For more information, call 885-7178.

* FRANKENSTEIN FOLLIES A HALLOWEEN SPOOF, 2 p.m. at the LEAD Center in Kona. The 90-minute Halloween-themed comedy/musical Frankenstein Follies is a story about the search for love. Along a twisted road, they will encounter vampires, ghouls, witches, skeletons and a teenage werewolf. In the end, a good time will be had by all… at the “Monster Mash.” Tickets are $8 and support the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity’s Youth and Education program.

* THE SHOPS AT MAUNA LANI will host an afternoon of Halloween fun beginning at 4 p.m. Trick-or-treating at various stores, live music and entertainment, a magic show, and 4D movies in addition to the annual keiki costume parade. Free.

* THE QUEENS’ MARKETPLACE, 4-8 p.m., offers kids of all ages the opportunity to trick-or-treat at the marketplace’s retailers and restaurants.

* KAHUKU PARK “Trunk-O-Treat” Halloween Program, 5-7 p.m. Call Wesley Sermons 929-9113.

* PAHOA COMMUNITY CENTER “Trunk-O-Treat” Halloween Program 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3. Call Glenn Kokubun, 965-2710.

* HONOKAA PEOPLE’S THEATRE, 7-10 p.m., Sunday. Family-friendly Dance and Costume Contest for “Horrific Music, Awe-ful DJs, and a Terribly Good Evening!” There’s a keiki costume contest starting at 7 p.m. There’s also an adult costume contest, prizes, wacky games like pumpkin bowling, pin the head on the ghoul. Admission is $3. And before that, at 5 p.m., a showing of the movie “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahoole. Movie tickets are $6 adults, $4 seniors, $3 children 12 and under.
